Learn To Figure Skate With Professional
Coach And Ice Skating Instructor Claire LaDue

St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club of Michigan

Upright spins are the simplest variety of spin, and the earliest learned.

Basic Two-Foot Spin
This is the first spin I teach, the skaters makes a half a heart shaped entrance edge on one foot creating a small tight 3 turn and then brings the other foot down on to the ice, roughly parallel and shoulder-width apart. This is a teaching spin, I then introduce the feeling of a one-foot spin by starting from a two-foot spin then picking up one foot.

Basic One-foot Spins
The skaters makes a half a heart shaped entrance edge on one foot keeping the free leg behind resulting in a small 3 turn. The free leg then does a "rand da jambe" to the front. A beginner skater will then bring the free leg in until it is touching the spinning leg any where from the knee to the ankle area.

Scratch Spin
A more advanced upright spin is the Scratch Spin, The skaters makes a half a heart shaped entrance edge keeping the free leg behind and resulting in a small 3 turn. The free leg then does a "rand da jambe" to the front, the skater rides a little bit more forward on the blade to the "sweet spot". The free foot heel pulls into the outside knee of the skating foot and then pushes down until the ankles are tight. This produces a much faster spin.

Back Spin
The skaters makes a little more than a half a heart shaped entrance edge on an inside edge on the right foot ( counter spinners) keeping the free leg behind. After a small tight 3 turn the free leg ends up in front. The skater rides a little bit more forward on the blade to the "sweet spot". The free foot heel pulls into the outside knee of the skating foot and then pushes down until the ankles are tight. This produces a much faster spin, and is an esential spin to learn as this it the "air possition" needed when it is time to learn double jumps.
